There’s nothing like the sound of birdsong. On a crisp winter’s day I sat in my car, watching a tiny feathered friend hop about in the bare branches of a neighborhood tree. The soft sweet melody carried on the gentle breeze and brought to mind a promise – that we can count on God to care for us.
In Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, He encourages our worrisome hearts, imploring us not to fret about our daily needs, both large and small. In Matthew 6:26 Jesus says, “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?” (NIV)
How often and how easily do we forget that we are valuable in God’s eyes? We are indeed, “…fearfully and wonderfully made…” by an awesome Creator (Psalm 139:14 NIV). Our loving Father cares about our every need. He knows the desires of our hearts. We are called to follow the Lord and trust that He will take care of us: “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” (Matthew 6:33 NIV)
Jesus goes on to conclude, “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” (Matthew 6:33-34 NIV) He wisely counsels us to not fear the future, to not get so far ahead of ourselves that we get caught up in worry and anxiety. He will provide for our daily needs, hour by hour, moment by moment. He is with us always and He promises to provide. In what areas of your life do you need this reminder? Let this promise encourage your heart today as you place your trust in Jesus.
And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of His glory in Christ Jesus.
