On this last day of the year, I am struck by a flurry of emotions – grief, sadness, hopefulness, gratefulness, uncertainty. This past year has been one of ups and downs, but isn’t every year? There are always difficulties and seasons of disappointment, but always alongside moments of joy and a deep-seated peace that the Lord is in control.
As I look ahead to the new year, I do so with hopefulness, taking to heart Psalm 118:24 “This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” (NIV) Indeed, each day brings with it a chance to begin afresh – to look on the bright side, even in the midst of the struggle or uncertainty. We can do so because of our faith in an unchanging God – a God who holds the universe in His hands and knows the secrets of our hearts. God is the same today as He was yesterday, and He promises to be with us each day of this new year – just as He was with us in 2020.
We can have confidence in knowing that the Lord goes before us and will guide us each new morning. All we need to do is ask for His direction, as the psalmist does here: “Point out the road I must travel; I’m all ears, all eyes before You.” (Psalm 143:10 NIV)
So as we enter a fresh beginning, let us continue to trust our almighty God. Let’s also challenge ourselves to look with fresh eyes on each new day as a new opportunity to live fully for His glory.
