Inside the Storm

Sometimes it feels like the world is falling out from under your feet. You receive some life-altering news and now you’re left floundering – wondering what on earth to do.

When you’re launched into a storm, your first instinct might be to try and outrun it, or perhaps you hunker down, waiting for the worst. The tempest rages, the gusts sweep over you, the waves pour into your boat. It seems as though all is lost.

But wait. Look first to the One who calms the storms. Look up. Cry out in prayer for Him to draw close. He’s already with you. In fact, He never left. He’s willing to ride out the storm with you, and when it’s time, He will bring it to an end.

Psalm 107:28-29 NIV demonstrates exactly that:

“Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble,

and He brought them out of their distress.

He stilled the storm to a whisper;

the waves of the sea were hushed.”

If you’re riding out a storm right now, remember that God goes with you. Jesus Himself is in your boat. Don’t be discouraged. Keep trusting the master Navigator. Smoother sailing is ahead.

The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; He knows those who take refuge in Him.

Nahum 1:7 ESV

    As I read your words I was visualizing the storm, and feeling powerless in the midst of the “tempest raging”. Feeling scared, unsettled and powerless. Reminded me of the feeling I had during the earthquake in 1987. Sitting on the freeway on my way home from work and watching the ground literally moving in waves as I clenched the wheel of the car and waited it out. “Crying out for Him to draw close”. Trusting that He would “ride the wave” with me. My anchor when I had no footing and I felt like “the world was falling out from under my feet”. And then came the calm. The earthquake stopped, but I still felt the shaking and rolling deep within. I can even feel it now as I remember. So I visualize Jesus with me in the car that day taking the wheel as the “master Navigator”. I feel the security of His presence, His power, and His willingness to “ride out the wave with me” and my body settles, my mind calms, and I feel assured that “He will bring it to an end”. Thanks for painting such a clear picture with your words and giving the visible antidote for those times of distress. Powerful and healing visuals to help calm the storm within even so many years later!
