King of Kings

When we think of rulers and positions of power, we often think of politics and the leaders of countries. Sometimes we forget the real ruler of this world – Jesus Christ, the King of Kings.

God sent His Son into the world as an example to us. An example of love, gentleness, patience, holiness, peacefulness, selflessness, and humility. Jesus was all of these things during His time on earth. When He was healing the sick and ministering to the poor. When He was turning water into wine and speaking with the Samaritan woman at the well. In all He did, Jesus fulfilled the Old Testament prophecy of Isaiah in which God says:

“Here is my servant whom I have chosen, the one I love, in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on Him, and He will proclaim justice to the nations. He will not quarrel or cry out; no one will hear His voice in the streets. A bruised reed He will not break, and a smoldering wick He will not snuff out, till He has brought justice through to victory. In His name the nations will put their hope.” (Matthew 12:18-21 NIV)

This New Testament reference to the passage in Isaiah 42:1-4 demonstrates what a peaceful man Jesus was. He did not quarrel or cry out. He did not come to destroy. Instead, His was a ministry of peace and justice and love. When asked what the greatest commandment was Jesus answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” (Mark 12:30-31 NIV)

Jesus came to this world out of love for you and me. He ministered to the brokenhearted, the sick, and the outcast. He died an excruciating death on the cross as punishment for our sins. And He rose triumphantly on the third day, so that we too can conquer death.

Daniel describes a vision he had of Jesus being gifted his kingdom from God:

“And to Him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve Him; His dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and His kingdom one that shall not be destroyed.” (Daniel 7:14 ESV)

When we get caught up in the cares of this world, we can take heart and remember that Jesus is King of Kings and His kingdom will reign forever!

The Lord reigns, He is robed in majesty… and armed with strength… Your throne was established long ago; You are from all eternity.

Psalm 93:1-2
