Have you ever had a heated argument with someone? One where you just knew there was no changing the other person’s mind? Me too. It’s never fun to disagree with someone, especially when it’s someone you’re close to. But differences of opinion are only natural. In other words, disagreements are bound to happen from time to time. The important thing is how we treat each other. The Bible has plenty to say on that topic, so let’s take a closer look.
Colossians 3:12 tells us, “Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience.” (ESV) Ephesians 4:2 echoes that statement, saying, “Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.” (NIV) Show compassion and a tender heart to one another. Practice humility and patience, not rushing to judgement, but hearing each other out. Find ways to compromise and bear with one another in a loving manner. The practice of genuine kindness goes a long way. That doesn’t mean it’s going to be easy, especially when you’re strong in your convictions, but it is always possible, and more so, it is what Jesus calls us to do. Micah 6:8 says, “He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” (ESV)
So let’s go forth as God’s chosen ones, living out kindness in our everyday lives. Open your eyes to the needs around you. Open your heart to hear someone else’s ideas and be willing to listen. Act with compassion toward your family, friends, co-workers, and neighbors. Show gentleness to strangers and lift others up whenever you have the chance. Our world could use a little more kindness. Let it start with me and you.
Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.
