You’ve heard about Jesus’s first miracle – where He turned water into wine – but have you taken a closer look at the significance of this. Jesus and His disciples were invited to a wedding in Cana. His mother was there too, and when the wine ran out, she came to Him with the dilemma. She must have been close to the bride or bridegroom’s family, to worry about their shame in running out of drink for their guests. So she came to her son, the Son of God, and asked Him for a miracle. Jesus was hesitant at first, saying, “‘Woman, why do you involve me?… My hour has not yet come.’” (John 2:4) But His mother persisted, with great faith that Jesus would follow through. She turned to the servants and told them to, “’Do whatever He tells you.’” (John 2:5 NIV) Jesus proceeds to ask the servants to fill six stone jars with water. Then He tells them to draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet. The master of the banquet says to the bridegroom, “‘Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.’” (John 2:10 NIV) Not only did Jesus fulfill the need for wine, but He exceeded the need with the choicest wine – only the best.
This event makes me think about more than just the miracle. Jesus was invited to a wedding, meaning He had friends who knew and respected Him, friends who wanted Him there to celebrate their joyous occasion in getting married. Jesus loves to celebrate with us! He wants to be invited into our joyful moments and big occasions. Had He not been invited in the first place, He would not have been there to perform the miracle. This is an important point. A thriving relationship with Jesus means first inviting Him into your heart as your Lord and Savior. What occasion could be more wondrous than that? Won’t you invite Him into your life today?
What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.
